Autoruns 10 from Sysinternals

Using the tool Autoruns to clean up autoruns!

I found a very nice tool to clean up autoruns, it’s even from Sysinternals again. Just download and start it, it’s not necessary to install it. So you can just take it with you on your USB device to help friends for example.

After starting the tool you can walk through the different tabs and see lists eg. services or logons. You can see the detail information about the keys and programs. It’s handy to clean up autoruns and find malware even though some knowledge of what you’re doing is required.

Windows Autostart

Annoying autorun of some tools

After you installed a program it sometimes happens that the developer of it consider it as to important and it starts up with every windows logon automated. This happens for example with Acrobat, OpenOffice, Nero and so on. That’s anoying because there are to many icons in the info bar or/and (more important) the system slows down after longer time of usage. Some people solve this issue by reinstalling windows, but that’s never a good solution.

Better open the windows config dialog and do the following to remove programs from the autostart list:

  • Press Windows key + r
  • Enter “msconfig” (the dialog pops up)
  • Switch to the tab page “Startup” (german: “Systemstart”)
  • Here you have to uncheck the programs which shouldn’t startup automated (doesn’t mean they don’t startup by manual opening them)
  • Confirm with “OK”

There are several tools to do that or for power users there is always the way of editing the registry. I’m not going in detail for now because I think the mentioned way is the simplest for “standard” users.
